  Season's

 Advice

Changing Weather - Spring Time

Now its time for season to change since Winter is ending and Spring has started. Recently we celebrated Basant Panchmi, 5th day of Basant month as per hindi calender, In this month the sunshine will increase more as compare to winter in this month, but winter has not ended fully therefore there will be good mix of coolness of winter and warmth of sunshine . This mix of both weather conditions create temperatures conducive for plants and their growth where there is neither the excess of coolness and no excess of sun This is ideal for all sorts of plants.  Therefore if you had protected your plants from severe winter by covering them in any manner or putting them away from open to protect damage form frost etc, now is good time to remove all such covering and re-put them back in open and sun. This weather helps plants in there growth and you will see new sprouting of leaves and fantastic flowering,  At this time you can put seed & cuttings in soil too, for making new plants, They too will germinate more easily and quickly than any other time. But maintain watering constraint for some more time and water plants carefully noting increase and decrease in coolness and sunshine. So take benefit of this mix of ending coolness, growing warmth & sunshine weather.

Do Mulching, Lessen Vaporization

Go for mulching to reduce the evaporation of water from top of soil of plant pots. Mulching is the technique using which we can maintain moisture in plants in summer season.

1st Way :- To do it collect the dry leaves, grass, fallen twigs, bark of trees and put on top of soil of your plant pots, spreading evenly in thick layer on top and put some stone or weight on it so it couldn't move. Cocopeat or moss grass purchased can also be used for this mulching. Such material put on pot top soil is called

mulch.

2nd Way :- In mulching mulch medium like moss grass or tiny plants which grow just 1 inch at most can be grown / grow on own in pots along with main pot plant. These mulches make a sort of cushion on soil which reduce evaporation from soil top thus helping plant beat summer heat. Since evaporation get reduced by mulching plants do not require large quantity of watering and this help nourishing plants in heat conditions too So use mulch and save plant moisture.

Benefits of Greens and Gardening

Controls and Reduce Floods
Greens help control floods. Year after year the flood situation is becoming worst in whole world.
Recalling the Kerela floods  which occured some years back and made big harm to human life and other beings. note the reason of recent Kerela floods. Its being  said by expert that excessive concretization  and deforestation was the prime cause of such devastating floods.   Same is happening everywhere in other parts of world.
Greens/ Forests and Trees in them help reduce such floods .
The roots system of the trees collectively go deep into soil and form a net of roots , which hold the soil and them this soil keep  the excess water absorbed into into.
This absorbed water by soil is gradually released into streams and rivers.thus preventing flow of excess water and reducing floods or at least flood intensity and impact.
Also this absorbed water goes more deeper and recharge ground    water aquifirs.
In absence of greens there is no roots net and thus soil becomes loosen which get easily carried away by flood flows.
So Increase Greens Help Prevent Floods

Kitchen Garden

Capsicum / Shimla Mirch

Capsicum in hindi is called Shimla Mirch  is an important veggie for exotic cuisines. Its flavour is world re-knowned and appreciated all over. Capsicum can be easily grown from seeds, But trick is to get seeds. Seeds can be bought from garden shops or can be procured at home too.

At home, buy big size capsicum from market and dry it completely in sun. On drying tear open the dried capsicum and you will get tiny golden color seeds. These seeds can be propagated into new capsicum plant.
Way 1)  Put these seeds on a wet double tissue paper in a line separate from each other. Cover these seeds by another tissue paper on doubling it too. Make it moist by sprinkling water on it. In about 20 days seeds inside tissue paper will sprout and these now can be transplanted in small containers. On growing upto 1 ft height again transplant the grown up capsicum plant in big container or earth which will grow into full grown capsicum plant and give you fruit in season
Way 2)  Sow the procured seeds into small container ( say small plastic glass will be good for sowing) or seeds can be sowed with other grown big plant in its container too. Sow about 2 mm deep only as capsicum seed are very tiny and light in weight. If in glass then keep the soil in glass moist and avoid excess watering , Keep the seed glass / container in partial sun only . In about 20-30 days seeds will germinate in container. Give new sprouted sapling some support by fixing small dry sticks or branches around it. Season to grow capsicum is Mid May - June but can go for it till mid July . On plant growing upto 10-12 inches in small container, break open the container and transplant it with its roots in ground or big plant pot and water it . Soon plant will grow completely and give fruit of capsicum in its season.

 Pruning the Plant

Pruning of plant at regular interval is Good & Important......Reasons As : -

1 )   to train the plant....means giving it beautiful shape

2 )  to maintain plant health......cutting diseased branches and twigs  preventing disease spread

3 )  to improve the quality of flowers, fruit, foliage or stems
Branches that appear after cutting happens to be more healthy
leading to more flowers and eventually more fruits

4 )  to restrict growth........to maintain reasonable growth, and stop plant wild growth. So, do prune you plants for benefits at right time in adequate manner

But Over Pruning may lead to plant destruction so judge cautiously how much pruning a plant requires as per need of particular plant.

Trimming Roots

Its really essential to trim the roots of potted plants from time to time.

Else the roots break the pot into pieces or may get choked altogether resulting in dying of plant.

The right way to take out plant is make the plant pot lay down of floor and mildly hot it with the trowel of some thick wooden stick all around it by rolling the plant pot with plant in it on floor ( ludkate hue gol gol, khurpi se dheere dheere hit karo) above in between and downwards of pot, This will loosen the grip of roots of plant into pot. Now hold the plant with its branches tightly and slowly pull the plant out of pot while pot still lying on floor. The plant as whole will come out of pot with its soil having shape of the pot.

Trim the roots by trowel, fill again the pot with soil and re-pot the plant, water a little and allow plant to get roots again and reset itself.

It may take 15-20 days for plant to reset itself

Seeds Sowing

Plant seeds happen to be of different size & shapes, types from tiny like sand grain to large size like mango tree seed or even bigger. When seeds are to be sowed certain points should be remembered :-   1 )  Size of seeds to be considered at time of sowing. Depth at which seed is to be put into soil depend on its size. shape don't matter much. (a) Smaller / tinier the seed, it is needed to be put near  or on soil surface even, just 1 mm depth is enough for seeds of size like sand grain . (b) Seeds of size like of musturd seeds, 1 cm soil depth is good to be put into. (c) Lentil size seeds to be put more deep say 2 cm into soil (d) Any seed in big size like of mango to be sowed 4-6 inches deep in soil.  Likewise thicker and bigger seeds to be sowed deeper into soil.  2) Make hole in soil mix of required depth put seeds into hole and fill the same with soil mix. 3) Press the seeds sowed in depth with fingers mildly. Seeds if sowed near soil should not be pressed, gently put soil mix over them. 4) Water the seeds sowed gently and avoid watering from height, best is to water either by water spraying or by pouring from a mug, 5) Such sowed seeds are to be kept in adequate temperature to germinate, general way is to put in place where such seed sowed get 1 hour sunshine (dhoop) & partially in shade.

Preserve Seeds & Bulbs
Seeds come to plant after the flowers dry up . So if your plants have dried up flowers then don't cut off all and let some dried up flowers be there on plant, Such dried up flowers will bear seeds either in shape of seed pods or individual seeds. Let such seed pods, if they are their or flowers dry completely on plants and become brown in color. After the color change collect such seed pods, press open them and you will get seeds, or pluck individual seeds after the color changes to brown on drying.
If you are not able to judge / identify the seeds then let dried up flower petals become crispy and then pluck complete dried up flower. which in next season will give new plant on sowing it.
Bulbs of plants like dehila can also be preserved After plants by bulbs dry up just take out complete plants out of pot and look for eye round shape / or node of bulb, Now you need to save bulb with this eye or node, Either dip such bulbs in fungicide powder and wrap in dry newspaper and polythene and keep in dry place for sowing or 2nd way is to put them in dry soil (sookhi mitti wala pot) into a container, take care you don't have to water such pot with bulbs till the plant season arrives again. Such preserved seeds/ bulbs can be used to grow new plants in next season.
